
The US iPhone 18 Pro Max carries a Qualcomm modem, and Apple's spec page quietly says so
A TechInsights teardown published on 18 September found Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 in the US iPhone 18 Pro Max, the only model in the line not using Apple's C2.
A teardown of the iPhone 18 Pro Max published by the analysis firm TechInsights on 18 September identifies a Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 modem inside the device, rather than Apple's own C2.
TechInsights lists the teardown unit as model A3473 and names the modem as a Snapdragon X80 marked SDX80M, paired with a Qualcomm SDR875 converged radio frequency transceiver. The same board analysis records an Apple A20 Pro processor, LPDDR5X memory, 256GB of NAND flash, an Apple wireless combination module labelled N1, an Apple ultra wideband module, an NXP near field communication controller, and a previously unseen Apple millimetre wave antenna module marked 339M00418. MacRumors, reporting the teardown, notes that the device's modem firmware had already pointed the same way.
MacRumors adds the part that makes it a story rather than a parts list: the smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo use Apple's C2 modem everywhere, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses the C2 in every country except the United States. One model, in one market, on a different radio.
What Apple's own specification page shows

Apple has not commented, but its published specifications are consistent with the teardown in a way that has gone unremarked. The wireless section of the iPhone 18 Pro specification page lists, for the iPhone 18 Pro, an Apple N1 wireless networking chip, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, a second generation Apple ultra wideband chip, near field communication with reader mode, and an Apple C2 cellular modem. The iPhone 18 Pro Max column repeats that list item for item and stops before the modem. The phrase Apple C2 cellular modem appears once on the page, and it is not in the Max's column.
Both models list the same millimetre wave bands, n258, n260 and n261, and both list 5G with 4x4 MIMO. Nothing in the published band tables distinguishes them. The difference is only in which chip Apple is willing to name.
Our take
MacRumors offers one explanation, that Apple may be meeting a supply agreement in the narrowest way available, and points to Qualcomm's 2023 statement that it would supply Apple with smartphone modems through 2026. That is speculation and MacRumors says so. It is also the only explanation on offer that accounts for the shape of the thing, because nothing else does. A capability gap would not fit: Apple says the C2 supports millimetre wave in the United States, which is exactly the feature the previous C1 and C1X lacked, and the C2 is in every iPhone 18 Pro Max sold outside America. If the C2 could not do the job in the US, it could not do the job in the Max at all.
What we would watch instead is the volume question. The Pro Max is the highest selling model in the line and the United States is its largest single market, so the exception is not a rounding error. Whatever contractual or supply arrangement produced it is being satisfied with a meaningful number of units rather than a token one. That is worth remembering the next time Apple's modem transition is described as complete.
For anyone building software, the honest answer is that this changes very little and should be treated as a footnote rather than a variable. There is no public API that reports modem vendor, the band tables are identical, and an app cannot and should not branch on it. What it does change is how you read a bug report. If cellular behaviour differs between two iPhone 18 Pro Max units and both are on the same iOS build, the region the phone was bought in is now a question worth asking, and it was not a sensible question a week ago.
The performance comparison everyone wants does not exist yet. MacRumors says plainly that the C2 and Snapdragon X80 have not been tested against each other. Apple's own claim for the C2 is relative to its predecessor rather than to Qualcomm: meaningfully faster uploads than the C1X, at 15 per cent less energy. Until somebody runs both phones on the same network in the same place, anything said about which is better is a guess dressed as a finding.
