The premise
Nappsis is built for the handful of people you actually know rather than for an audience. Moments post to a shared timeline organised by date, and the group is closed. That framing removed features as much as it added them: no public follower counts, no algorithmic feed, no mechanics designed to pull people back in.
What we built
- Date-organised shared timeline for a closed group
- Group messaging alongside the timeline rather than bolted onto it
- Strictly chronological ordering - no ranking, no injected content
- Member profiles scoped to the group, never public
- Notifications that batch rather than interrupt
Privacy as architecture
Products that promise privacy in the marketing and collect everything in the implementation get found out. We kept the data model narrow - collecting what the features genuinely require and nothing speculative - because the most reliable way to avoid mishandling data is not to hold it.
The hardest part was restraint
Every engagement pattern deliberately left out is one a competitor uses, and each demonstrably increases session time. Holding that line is a product decision rather than a technical one, and it has to be re-made every time someone proposes a reasonable-sounding exception.
