Microsoft OneDrive will drop iOS 18, ending updates on the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max
Microsoft will stop updating OneDrive on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. Which iPhones and iPads that leaves behind, what keeps working, and what owners can do.
Microsoft will stop releasing OneDrive updates for iPhones and iPads running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18, the company says in a notice on the app's App Store listing.
The notice says Microsoft plans on dropping support for those versions soon, and asks users to move to iOS or iPadOS 26 or 27 to keep getting the latest version. It gives no date. MacRumors reports that the release notes of Microsoft's latest TestFlight beta name OneDrive 18.12.1 as the final version for iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. We could not read those notes ourselves. The version on the App Store on 6 October was 18.11.2, so if MacRumors is right, one more update reaches iOS 18 before the cut-off.
Which iPhones and iPads lose OneDrive updates?
Any device that cannot install iOS 26 or iPadOS 26. MacRumors names the iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, and the seventh-generation iPad. That matches Apple's own list for iOS 27, which starts at the iPhone 11 and the second-generation iPhone SE. Newer devices still running iOS 18 by choice are also affected, but they can update.
Will OneDrive stop working on older iPhones?
Not straight away. MacRumors says existing installs are not expected to stop working when support ends; they will simply get no new features or fixes. Microsoft's notice does not say how long an unsupported version will keep syncing, and that is the question that matters to anyone who relies on it for work files. The OneDrive website in Safari is the obvious fallback, though Microsoft has not said so.
Our take
This is the normal shape of an app's support window, and Microsoft is not early. It is keeping the two newest versions of iOS and dropping the third, a year after iOS 26 left these phones behind. When iOS 27 shipped our advice to app makers was not to raise their deployment target straight away, and dropping iOS 18 now, rather than iOS 26, is the same instinct: follow the users, not the release calendar.
For owners of an iPhone XR or XS it is still a signal worth reading. A phone that stopped getting new versions of iOS keeps working for years, but the apps on it age one by one, and file sync is the kind of app where an unfixed bug costs more than a missing feature. A cloud storage client is also one of the first apps a business checks on a managed device.
The notice covers OneDrive only. Microsoft has said nothing about Word, Excel, Outlook or Teams on iOS 18, and we would not assume they follow on the same day. APPDOOK's advice to anyone on an iPhone XR or XS who keeps work in OneDrive is to plan the replacement now, while the app still updates, rather than after a sync problem with no fix coming.
