Apple Home Collection: LG and Schneider make a $349 hands-free lock, four cameras and two thermostats for Apple Home

Apple Home Collection is a range of LG and Schneider cameras, a lock and thermostats, set up with one tap and run from the Home app, from December.

Apple announced Apple Home Collection, a range of smart home accessories made with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric, on 13 October.

The range has four LG cameras, an LG door lock, a thermostat each from LG and Schneider, and matching room sensors. Apple says each one is set up by tapping an iPhone, needs no separate app or account, and is run entirely from the Home app and Siri, with Home data encrypted end to end so that neither Apple nor its partners can read it. Every device supports Thread. Sales start in December from Apple's stores, with some products held back until early 2027. Apple does not say which.

The line-up confirms a month of reporting. Bloomberg first said LG was building Apple Home products, backed by LG filings showing a lock, a doorbell and a thermostat, and iOS 27.2 code later named Schneider as a second partner. Apple also confirmed that ADT will install the products through Apple Retail in the US for an extra charge, which settles the ADT hiring claim we had marked unconfirmed.

What does each product do?

  • Cameras: all four record up to 2.5K and recognise people, familiar faces, pets, vehicles and packages through HomeKit Secure Video. Recordings go to iCloud+ for 10 days, with no camera subscription, and local storage keeps them recording if Wi-Fi drops.
  • Video Doorbell: two cameras, a 2.5K front view and a full HD view looking down at parcels, plus a spotlight. It must be wired in, and it rings HomeView and HomePods as its chime.
  • Indoor Cam: tilts up to watch the room when everyone is out, and tilts down to stop monitoring when the first person gets home, Apple says.
  • Smart Deadbolt Lock: unlocks as you walk up with an iPhone or Apple Watch, using Ultra Wideband, with no tap needed. It also has a PIN pad, tap to unlock and a hidden key slot, supports Matter and Aliro, and works locally without the internet. The Verge says it fits US-style deadbolts and runs on AA batteries.
  • Thermostats: both use the Home app's Adaptive Temperature, can read sensors in other rooms or the sensors inside HomeView and HomePods, and detect their own wiring during install. In the contiguous US, Clean Energy Guidance can move heating and cooling to cheaper, cleaner hours.

The Apple Intelligence camera features, written descriptions of clips and searching footage in plain language, need an eligible iCloud+ plan and an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad. Apple's footnote sets the camera limits by plan: one camera on 50GB, five on 200GB, and unlimited on 2TB.

Our take

This is Apple doing what Amazon does with Ring and Google with Nest, as The Verge also notes: giving buyers a short list of products it stands behind. The difference is that Apple did not build them. LG and Schneider make the hardware, and Apple sets the rules: one-tap setup, no extra app, no extra account and nothing the maker can see. That is the real product here, and it answers the commonest complaint about smart homes, which is juggling apps.

The lock is the standout. The Verge counts it as only the third lock on the market to support Apple's hands-free unlocking, and the Indoor Cam that physically points away when you are home is a privacy idea a viewer understands without reading a policy. None of it is cheap: $349.95 for the lock and $399.95 for the floodlight camera. APPDOOK's view is that the lock and the Indoor Cam are the reasons to buy into the range; the thermostats are for people choosing one anyway.

Outside North America the story is thinner. UK buyers get the four cameras and nothing else, and the rest of the world gets none of it. The camera and its cloud storage also depend on iCloud+, so the true running cost is a storage plan, and a 50GB plan covers a single camera. Apple's own security camera is not in the range at all, which matches Gurman's report that it is separate from LG's and due in 2027. Still unknown: which products slip to 2027, when the UK sees the lock and thermostats, and how ADT installation is priced.
