Unconfirmed: MacRumors says secret ADT technician hires point to an Apple partnership at the 13 October home launch
MacRumors says ADT has been hiring secretive technicians, issued them iPhones and delayed their briefing to October. Nothing confirms an Apple deal yet.
MacRumors reported on 11 October that ADT, the largest home security company in the US, may be about to announce a partnership with Apple.
The report rests on clues from ADT employees whom MacRumors does not name, not on any document, and MacRumors itself labels it a rumour. On APPDOOK's grading that makes it unverified: a named outlet, but anonymous sources and nothing shown. Neither Apple nor ADT has commented, and no other outlet has independently confirmed it.
What are the clues?
Since around July, ADT has advertised Low Voltage Technician roles in several US cities. ADT's own listings describe installing systems under 50 volts in customers' homes and say nothing about Apple. MacRumors says the people hired have been told very little, have mostly shadowed other technicians, and in some cases signed a non-disclosure agreement for the role. It reports three further details:
- The new hires were given iPhones for work, while ADT's other technicians use Android phones.
- They were told details would come later this month, after an earlier plan to brief them in September slipped to October.
- Managers described the role as home automation and in-home installation.
The timing lines up with Apple's Welcome home event in New York on Tuesday 13 October, where the company is expected to show its home hub. MacRumors suggests ADT technicians could offer professional installation of the wall-mounted hub or of LG's accessories, and says it does not know whether the deal would include security monitoring.
What about ADT and Google?
ADT already works with Google. MacRumors dates that partnership to 2023, but CNBC reported its announcement on 3 August 2020, when Google agreed to invest 450 million dollars for a 6.6 per cent stake in ADT. MacRumors says people familiar with the matter told it the Google agreement has expired or will expire next year without renewal. That claim is unconfirmed.
Our take
Taken one by one, the clues are weak. Companies issue iPhones, briefings slip, and installers sign non-disclosure agreements for many reasons. Taken together they are suggestive, and the delay from September to October matches how Apple's home hub slipped while Siri AI was finished. What would settle it is simple: an ADT name on Apple's newsroom post on Tuesday.
If it is true, the interesting part is installation, not monitoring. A wall-mounted hub needs power behind a wall, and Apple does not do home visits. Apple confirmed a 13 October launch called Welcome home, and Bloomberg has reported that LG is building a lock, doorbell and thermostat for Apple Home. Each of those benefits from someone who wires doorbells for a living. That is a sensible gap for a partner to fill.
Monitoring would be a bigger step. Apple has kept security cameras to its own encrypted HomeKit Secure Video, and Apple's own security camera is reported as separate from LG's and still due in 2027. A paid alarm service run by ADT would sit awkwardly with that privacy pitch. APPDOOK's judgement is that an installation partnership is plausible and a monitoring deal less so, and that neither should be treated as real until Apple or ADT says it.
