Apple's October Hello Developer adds iPhone Duo Group Labs, a 29 October speed event and docs in eight languages

Apple's October developer newsletter sets two iPhone Duo Group Labs, a Cupertino day on app speed and documentation in eight languages. The dates and what is new.

Apple published its October 2026 Hello Developer newsletter on 6 October, with new iPhone Duo Group Labs, an in-person event on app speed and efficiency, and its developer documentation in eight more languages.

Hello Developer is Apple's monthly round-up for people who build for its platforms. Two of its five items repeat news from earlier in the week: that iPhone Duo apps can be submitted now, ahead of the phone's 23 October launch, and the new App Store creative assets. The other three are new, and each has a date or a list worth knowing.

When are the iPhone Duo Group Labs?

Apple has scheduled a second round of online Group Labs, where developers put questions to Apple engineers and designers about building for the foldable:

  • 13 October, 6pm to 7pm Pacific time
  • 15 October, 9am to 10am Pacific time

Registration is through the Apple Developer events pages. The first round is on demand as a video, with a written summary in the developer forums, and Apple says its in-person iPhone Duo workshops have expanded to more locations. The newsletter also points to the Human Interface Guidelines page for designing for iPhone Duo, a guide to preparing an app, and new documentation on choosing a camera by which way it faces and on registering camera accessories.

The 29 October speed and efficiency day

Apple is holding an all-day event called Boost your app's speed and efficiency in Cupertino on 29 October, with a livestream for those who cannot attend. It covers finding performance problems, diagnosing them with Xcode and Instruments, and acting on performance data. In-person attendance is by request.

Documentation in eight languages

Apple's developer documentation is now available in Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin American Spanish and Simplified Chinese. The newsletter does not say whether every page is covered or only part of the library.

A leak alongside: two-page PDFs on iPhone Duo

Separately, and not from Apple, the code researcher pdfu posted a video on 6 October showing Quick Look, the system PDF viewer, laying out two pages side by side on iPhone Duo when it is held open like a book, 9to5Mac reports. It is Evidence grade, from Apple's own software, but Apple has not shown it. 9to5Mac notes that Apple Pencil support for the Duo is expected later in the year.

Our take

The Group Labs are the item with a deadline. The second session falls eight days before launch, which is late for design questions and about right for the last fixes. Combined with Duo screenshots becoming mandatory in April 2027, the message is that Apple expects most apps to ship something for the foldable within six months, and is offering help now rather than later. Anyone who has not yet opened the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1 has about two weeks to do so before the first customers do it for them.

The two-page PDF view matters for the same reason. Apple's own apps set what users expect from the open book posture, and a reader that shows facing pages on the system viewer will make an app that shows one page stretched across the fold look unfinished. Apple's own guidance is not to build a layout on the hinge angle, and a two-page layout is the kind of design that respects that.

Localised documentation is the quietest item and possibly the most useful. A great deal of Apple development happens in Brazil, Japan, Korea and China by people for whom English documentation has always been a second hurdle. APPDOOK would like to know how much of the library is translated, and how quickly translations follow new APIs, because documentation that lags a release by months helps less than it seems.
