iPad mini 8 leaks: Apple's code shows an A20 Pro, and much of the rest is still rumour

Code MacRumors found points to an A20 Pro and a landscape camera on the next iPad mini. OLED comes from Bloomberg, and several other claims have no source.

Apple's next iPad mini will use the A20 Pro chip and move its front camera to the landscape edge, according to code that MacRumors says it found in Apple's own files.

MacRumors reported the find on 25 September, crediting its contributor Aaron Perris, and said the files included front-view product images. They show the camera in the long edge, a small groove cut into the top of the display glass, presumably for a speaker, and the volume and power buttons still on the top. MacRumors has not published the files themselves. On 30 September it gathered ten features it expects, and those ten rest on three quite different kinds of evidence. Apple has said nothing about a new iPad mini.

Which claims come from where?

  • Evidence, from Apple's code via MacRumors: the A20 Pro, the landscape front camera, the new speaker design.
  • Reported, by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman: an OLED display, water resistance, a vibration-based speaker, launch by end of October.
  • Unverified, with no source named: 12GB of memory, the N1 wireless chip, a C1X or C2 modem, slimmer bezels.

MacRumors says icons in the code appear to support Gurman's account of water resistance and the new speaker, which would move those two closer to evidence. The memory figure is MacRumors' own expectation: its 28 September piece says plainly that the leak did not reveal the iPad mini's memory, and reasons that 12GB would match both iPhone 18 Pro models. The performance multipliers in the list, about 1.5 times the CPU and 2.5 times the GPU of the A17 Pro, are estimates built on that chip assumption.

Even the chip comes with a caveat. The code does not show the exact configuration, and the current iPad mini uses a cut-down A17 Pro with a 5-core GPU rather than the iPhone 15 Pro's six. In the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple says the A20 Pro's CPU is up to 20 percent faster than the A19 Pro's and its GPU up to 40 percent faster. A trimmed version in the iPad mini would give less.

When will the iPad mini 8 launch?

Gurman wrote in August that a new iPad mini with an OLED display would arrive by the end of October. His 30 September report, though, named only a home hub, HomePod mini and Apple TV for 13 October. MacRumors lists the iPad mini separately, among products expected before the end of the year. Nothing published says whether it joins the 13 October launch, follows on its own, or slips.

Price is the other open question. The current iPad mini costs $599 in the US after a $100 increase in June, which Apple attributed to rising memory and storage chip prices, according to MacRumors.

Our take

The evidence here is lopsided, and the list format hides it. The feature most buyers care about, OLED, rests on Bloomberg's reporting, which is good but has not been seen in any file. The chip, which matters to fewer people, is the best-evidenced claim of all. A ten-point list reads as ten equal facts. It is three grades of claim mixed together, and readers should weigh them separately.

If the reported parts hold, this is the largest change to the iPad mini in years. A jump from the A17 Pro to the A20 Pro skips two chip generations, an OLED panel brings it into line with the iPad Pro, and an IP rating for water resistance would be a first for the iPad mini. The cost of all that is likely to land on a price that already rose by $100 this year, and APPDOOK's reading is that a figure above $599 is more likely than not, although no source gives one.

For buyers the advice follows from the timing. Paying $599 for the current model, with the A17 Pro and an LCD, makes little sense with a replacement reported for within weeks. The one claim we would most like confirmed is memory. MacRumors ties 12GB to Apple's most advanced on-device model, and so far that figure is a guess.
