Apple plans a second October launch, likely Macs, MacRumors sources say, as macOS 27.2 beta 3 adds touch gestures
MacRumors' sources say Apple has new products for the last week of October, most likely Macs, as macOS 27.2 beta 3 adds touch gesture code to Apple's apps.
MacRumors reported on 5 October that Apple plans to announce more new products in the last week of October, citing multiple sources familiar with the matter.
That would be in addition to 13 October, when Bloomberg has reported Apple will unveil a home hub, a new HomePod mini and a new Apple TV 4K, and to iPhone Duo going on sale on 23 October. MacRumors says it does not know which products are planned. It names Macs as the most likely: the OLED MacBook Pro it calls MacBook Ultra, a base 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 and an M6 iMac. Apple has already said a Mac Studio with M5 Ultra and 512GB of memory arrives in late October.
This is Reported grade, and it is one source. 9to5Mac and AppleInsider both credit MacRumors, and AppleInsider says plainly that the rest of its piece is speculation. No report gives a date or says whether there will be an event or press releases. 9to5Mac adds that Apple is expected to report quarterly results before the month ends. Apple has said nothing.
What the macOS 27.2 beta 3 code shows
Separately, macOS 27.2 beta 3, released the same day, adds touch gesture code to several of Apple's apps, found by Aaron Perris for MacRumors. Photos gains PXGTouchDwellGestureRecognizer, Notes gains ICTouchPressGestureRecognizer, Safari a touch sentinel recogniser and Quick Look a dragTouch feature. iClarified adds a clip posted on X by ldt showing a new long-press animation for Dock icons.
That is Evidence grade, with a caveat all three outlets make. macOS 27 already accepts full touch input through Sidecar, when an iPad is used as a Mac display, so the code may serve Sidecar rather than a touchscreen Mac, or both.
Which chips would the new MacBook Pro use?
The reports do not agree. MacRumors says the OLED model uses M5 Pro and M5 Max. 9to5Mac describes the touchscreen MacBook Pro as powered by M6. Earlier reporting we covered put an M6 MacBook Pro before the end of 2026 with no M6 Pro or M6 Max, which would make the base and high-end models different generations.
The iPad: an unconfirmed claim about bezels
Also on 5 October, a Weibo account known as Instant Digital posted that an iPad will get much thinner borders around its display. The post names no model and no date. It comes from an anonymous account, nothing corroborates it, and it is Unverified grade. The OLED iPad mini, already reported with slimmer bezels, is the obvious candidate, and its timing is still unsettled.
Our take
Two launches in one month is plausible on the calendar. Apple has done a late October Mac event before, on 30 October 2023, and a home products announcement on 13 October leaves room. What the MacRumors report adds is a week, not a product list, and the rest of the coverage is inference from earlier rumours. Treat the Mac line-up as the best guess, not a leak.
The touch code is more interesting than it first looks, because of what it touches. Long-press, dwell and drag are the three gestures a pointer does not need and a finger does: the press that replaces right-click, the hold that replaces hover, and dragging content directly. Building those into Photos, Notes and Quick Look is the work a touchscreen Mac needs, and it would also improve Sidecar, so both readings can be true. What it does not tell us is the date.
Last weekend's report said the OLED MacBook Pro will be significantly lighter, and nothing today contradicts it. APPDOOK's advice is unchanged and now has a date range attached: anyone about to buy a MacBook Pro or an iMac should wait until the end of October. If MacRumors is right, the decision will be clearer in three weeks; if not, the current models will still be there.
