Reports put an M6 MacBook Pro before the end of 2026, and no M6 Pro or M6 Max at all
Bloomberg's reporting points to an entry-level M6 MacBook Pro this year and an M6 MacBook Air in 2027, with no M6 Pro or M6 Max chips planned.
Apple will release an M6 MacBook Pro before the end of 2026 and will not make M6 Pro or M6 Max chips at all, according to Bloomberg reports that 9to5Mac collected into a release schedule on 30 September.
The chip itself is no rumour. Apple announced the M6 on 25 August in the new Mac mini. It is Apple's first 2-nanometre Mac chip, with a 12-core CPU of two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores, a 12-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each core, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, up to 32GB of unified memory and up to 170GB/s of memory bandwidth. What follows the Mac mini is the leak, at the reported grade: Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, across reports in June and July. Apple has not commented on any of it.
What is reported for this autumn?
In June Bloomberg reported that Apple had tested the M6 in an entry-level MacBook Pro and would release no higher-end M6 variants. The next Pro and Max chips would come in the M7 generation, with a base M7 as early as the first half of 2027, M7 Pro and M7 Max at the end of 2027, and an M7 Ultra in 2028. That would make the M6 the first Apple silicon generation since 2020 with no Pro or Max version.
In July Bloomberg added that Apple had finished a refreshed entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, code-named J804, with the current design and the base M6, planned for this year. A redesigned model, K104, is aimed at as early as the first half of 2027. A separate July report listed what Apple is aiming to launch before the end of the year: the M6 entry MacBook Pro, and new touchscreen 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook models with OLED screens using the M5 Pro and M5 Max, due between the end of this year and early next, and being tested on macOS 27.1.
Two parts of the schedule are softer. 9to5Mac's timing of October or early November is its own estimate from Apple's habits, not Bloomberg's wording. And an M6 iMac, which both 9to5Mac and MacRumors list for this autumn with new colours, is not traced to an original report in either article, so we treat it as less firmly sourced than the MacBook Pro.
What comes in 2027?
Bloomberg's July report says an updated MacBook Air line-up is planned for early 2027; 9to5Mac expects it to use the M6, and its suggestion of March is a guess from history. Bloomberg also says Apple is testing four iPad Pro models for spring 2027, and has previously tested vapour chamber cooling for them. An OLED MacBook Air is reported for as early as 2028.
How accurate has the M6 reporting been?
Bloomberg's June report can now be checked against Apple's August announcement. It said Apple had tested versions of the M6 GPU with up to 12 cores, and the shipping chip has 12. It said memory bandwidth would reach up to 200GB/s, and Apple's figure is 170GB/s. The structure and the timing were right and one number was not, which is a fair picture of what reported-grade leaks usually get right.
Our take
The claim that matters most is the missing M6 Pro and M6 Max, because it changes how the line-up fits together. If the reports hold, Apple's laptops at the end of this year would run on two generations at once: a base M6 in the cheapest MacBook Pro and M5 Pro and M5 Max in the new touchscreen models above it. Apple says the M6 has the world's fastest single-threaded CPU core, so it is possible, by our reading rather than any source's, that the cheaper machine will beat the more expensive ones at single-threaded work. That is an unusual position for Apple to put a buyer in, and it is the kind of thing Apple tends to explain at launch.
The faster cadence fits a company that is, by its own launch materials, selling chips on AI compute, and wants the M7's larger AI gains in professional machines quickly. It also brings risk. Bloomberg has warned that memory chip supplies could move the timing of some Macs, and Apple raised prices on more than a dozen products in June, MacRumors reports. Neither the dates nor the prices of any of these machines are settled.
APPDOOK's advice depends on the buyer. Anyone about to buy an M5 entry MacBook Pro should probably wait, because an M6 replacement is reported within months. Anyone waiting for an M6 Pro or M6 Max is, on this reporting, waiting for a chip Apple does not plan to make, and the choice is between the M5 Pro and M5 Max now or the M7 Pro and M7 Max at the end of 2027. The Mac mini was the first Mac with the M6, and as we reported, the new Mac mini went back to soldered storage, so storage is worth choosing carefully on any M6 Mac that follows.
