Apple TV will premiere Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook, an eight-episode culinary docuseries, worldwide on Friday 6 November.

Apple released the trailer on 1 October. The series follows Nora Lum, known as Awkwafina, as she tries to revive Lum's, her family's Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York, despite, as she says in the trailer, not being able to cook at all. Apple has not said whether all eight episodes arrive on the first day or weekly.

What happens in the series?

According to Apple's press release, Lum takes a course at the Culinary Institute of America, learns Texas barbecue with the actor Jimmy O. Yang, and takes lessons from the chefs Roy Choi and Martin Yan. In Hawai'i she looks into the tiki culture that inspired her grandmother's restaurant, and she works service at a restaurant in Los Angeles' Chinatown. The series ends with an opening night, with her grandmother at the table.

It is produced by Twofour, the company behind Apple's The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy, with Lum, David Brindley, Itay Reiss and Caroline Davies as executive producers. Apple first announced the show on 20 November 2025 as The Unlikely Cook with Awkwafina, also at eight episodes; the new release uses the reordered title without comment.

Where it fits on Apple TV

November's premiere falls after an October line-up led by Matchbox and Tenzing, and it is a different kind of programme from both. Apple's unscripted shows have tended to be built around a famous face out of their comfort zone, and The Reluctant Traveler, from the same producer, is the clearest example.

Our take

Apple has evidently found a formula it trusts. Take a well-liked performer, set them a task they are visibly bad at, and let warmth do the rest: The Reluctant Traveler ran for several seasons on exactly that, and hiring the same production company says Apple wants the same tone again. The family restaurant gives this one a stake that travel shows lack, and an ending that is built into the premise.

APPDOOK's observation is that unscripted series are the cheapest way for Apple TV to fill the gaps between its expensive dramas, and the service has been slow to use them. A celebrity cooking series in November, the start of the holiday food season, is scheduling with an audience in mind, which Apple has not always managed.

The risk is the one every celebrity docuseries carries: that the learning is staged and the stakes are borrowed. Whether Lum's cooking visibly improves over eight episodes, and whether the restaurant is a real business at the end or a set for one night, will decide whether this is a show about food or a show about a famous person near food. The trailer does not yet say which.
