Code in the audioOS 27.2 beta shows four-HomePod surround sound, with HomePods passing Siri requests to Apple TV
Code found in the third audioOS 27.2 beta lets Siri recognise a speaker in a surround system and relay requests to Apple TV, a week before Apple's 13 October launch.
Code in the third beta of audioOS 27.2, the HomePod's software, shows Apple preparing a surround sound system built from four HomePods, according to the code researcher known as pdfu.
This is Evidence grade: it comes from strings in Apple's own beta software, not from a source's account. pdfu's new finds, reported by MacRumors, AppleInsider and 9to5Mac on 6 October, are that Siri can match a speaker to the surround system it belongs to, and that a HomePod in a Home Theater group can pass a Siri request on to an Apple TV 4K. One string reads, in AppleInsider's rendering, that an accessory is a speaker in a named surround system. Apple has said nothing about the feature.
Separately, MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris found two new SF Symbols in the third macOS 27.2 beta showing four speakers arranged in a room, one of them labelled as part of a home theatre. Neither symbol names the HomePod. AppleInsider adds a third find from pdfu: a new light animation that appears when a HomePod is touched while Siri AI is busy with a request, drawn by code in real time rather than from stored frames.
How much of this has been seen working?
More than most leaks. The four-speaker layout first surfaced on 4 September in audioOS 27 beta 8, with front-left, front-right, rear-left and rear-right positions, room calibration and bass management, as FlatpanelsHD reported. On 23 September FlatpanelsHD went further and got an Apple TV 4K on tvOS 27.2 beta 2 to play through four HomePods at once, 9to5Mac reported. It was unfinished: there was no way to assign rear roles, so all four played the same audio, and menu and game sound came only from the front pair.
Today an Apple TV 4K can use at most two HomePods, as a stereo pair. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman expects Apple to announce a new HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K on 13 October. The reports disagree on what the surround system will need. AppleInsider reads a reference to a separate, older microphone path as a sign that a new Apple TV is required. MacRumors says it is unclear whether existing Apple TVs or existing HomePods will work, and recalls that pdfu earlier described Apple testing four second-generation HomePods as well as a mix with two unreleased rear speakers.
Second public betas of iOS 27.2 and tvOS 27.2
The code comes from builds anyone can now test. Apple released the second public betas of iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2, macOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2 and watchOS 27.2 on 6 October, a day after the third developer betas, MacRumors reports. They carry the redesigned Health app, new Apple TV app profile options and Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. HomePod software has no public beta, so none of the surround code above reaches public testers.
Our take
This is as solid as a leak gets without an announcement. Code, symbols and a working hands-on from an independent outlet all point the same way, and the timing lines up with Bloomberg's report of a HomePod mini and Apple TV for 13 October. APPDOOK would be surprised if four-speaker surround were not part of that launch. What we would not assume is which hardware it needs, because the reports genuinely disagree and the answer decides whether this is a free upgrade for people who already own four HomePods or a reason to buy new ones.
The Siri relay is the more interesting find. A HomePod that hands a request to the Apple TV beside it only makes sense if the Apple TV has something the HomePod lacks, and the obvious candidate is Apple Intelligence. We reported that the third tvOS 27.2 beta added Apple Intelligence settings text for Apple TV. Put together, the Apple TV starts to look like the brains of a living room and the HomePods like its ears.
Two things would confirm it: a supported hardware list on 13 October, and a setup flow in the Home app that assigns rear speakers. Until both exist, FlatpanelsHD's test shows the plumbing works and nothing more. Pricing matters too. Four HomePod minis cost far less than four full-size HomePods, and if the mini is supported, Apple has a home theatre offer at a price the current two-HomePod setup never reached.
