Unconfirmed: a leaker says Apple once planned 16GB of memory for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo
Weibo leaker Instant Digital claims Apple planned 16GB of RAM before settling on 12GB. Nothing corroborates it, but the memory shortage behind it is real.
A Weibo leaker known as Instant Digital claims Apple at one point planned to give the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo 16GB of memory.
This is Unverified grade. The claim is a brief Weibo post, reported by MacRumors and AppleInsider on 6 October, with no document, code or second source behind it. It does not say when Apple considered the larger figure or why it was dropped. Apple does not publish memory sizes for its iPhones and has said nothing about the claim.
How much memory do the phones actually have?
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have 12GB, the same as the iPhone 17 Pro models. MacRumors confirmed that from device data in Xcode 27 on 9 September. The iPhone Duo is expected to have 12GB too, since it uses the same A20 Pro chip, but that is an inference: Xcode's data did not include the foldable at the time, and no source has shown its memory. Before launch, analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu had both predicted 12GB, and Korean outlet The Bell reported in March that Samsung would supply 12GB modules for the Duo, MacRumors notes.
AppleInsider adds a timing caution. A chip takes two to three years to go from concept to production, so a 16GB plan, if there was one, could date from before memory prices started climbing.
The memory shortage behind the story
The part that is not in doubt is the squeeze on memory. Micron's chief executive, Sanjay Mehrotra, told investors on 1 October that supply would be much tighter in 2027 and 2028 than in 2026, Network World reported, and that more than 75 per cent of Micron's 2027 output is already committed. MacRumors also recalls Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reporting that memory costs led Apple to discuss a higher starting price for the Duo. AppleInsider, in an opinion piece on the same day, predicts another Apple price rise across products before the end of March 2027 and tells readers not to wait to buy.
Our take
On its own, this claim is close to unfalsifiable. Apple considers many configurations it never ships, and a leaker saying one of them existed tells us nothing we can check. APPDOOK gives it little weight as news about the iPhone 18 Pro, which shipped with 12GB and will not change.
Where it is worth reading is as a pointer to the next one. If memory is what stopped 16GB this year, and Micron says supply gets worse rather than better, the iPhone 19 Pro faces the same arithmetic with less room. Memory is now the line in Apple's leaks where cost shows first: we reported Apple's code pointing to an 8GB A19 iPad, the minimum for Apple Intelligence rather than anything generous.
On prices, AppleInsider's forecast is a judgement, not a report, and it should be read that way. It is a reasonable one given Micron's comments, but no one has shown an Apple plan for a rise. For someone choosing between an iPhone Duo and an iPhone 18 Pro Max at today's prices, the honest advice is that waiting is unlikely to make either cheaper, and the memory inside them will not grow before next September either way.
