Messages Suggestions are back in the iOS 27.2 beta, with Group FaceTime Dual Capture and TV app profiles
Messages Suggestions, pulled before iOS 27 shipped, have returned in the iOS 27.2 beta, alongside Group FaceTime Dual Capture and TV app profiles on iPhone.
Suggestions in Messages, an Apple Intelligence feature Apple removed before iOS 27 shipped, has returned in the iOS 27.2 beta.
9to5Mac reported the return on 30 September after testing the beta. Suggestions appear as small buttons under a message they relate to: a request can become a reminder or a note, a mentioned event can go to Calendar, and a request for photos prompts Messages to search the library by people, places and keywords. The feature ran through the summer iOS 27 betas. MacRumors recorded in its 16 September report on the first 27.2 beta that Apple had delayed it, together with an AI tool for fixing weak and compromised passwords, and 9to5Mac says Apple moved it to an unnamed future update.
9to5Mac does not say which 27.2 beta brought it back. The password tool has not been reported as returning.
What is different this time?
One tester's impression, so far. 9to5Mac's Ryan Christoffel writes that in the summer builds Suggestions sometimes appeared where nothing in the conversation called for them, and that in 27.2 they appear less often and the reason is always clear when they do. No other outlet has published its own testing, and Apple has not described any change. Several later reports repeat the observation, and each one traces back to 9to5Mac.
What else is in the iOS 27.2 beta?
Three further changes appear both in 9to5Mac's notes on the first beta and in its 29 September round-up:
- Dual Capture, which shows front and rear cameras at once, works in Group FaceTime calls. In iOS 27 it is limited to one-to-one calls.
- In Apple Podcasts, Up Next is renamed New Episodes, with a new Continue Playing section beneath it for shows already started.
- The Apple TV app on iPhone gains user profiles, brought over from tvOS. A child's profile shows only age-appropriate titles from Apple, and the profile picker can be switched off.
We have covered the beta's other changes on their own: Siri AI in five more languages, a new App Tracking Transparency prompt for the EU, and a Restrict Motion Data setting that appears only in China.
Our take
Pulling a feature shortly before launch and bringing it back a few weeks later, apparently quieter, fits the most likely explanation: it worked, but too eagerly. A suggestion button under every third message teaches people to ignore suggestion buttons, and once they have learnt that the feature is dead even when it is right. If the 27.2 version really does hold back, Apple has made the right trade. Be clear that this rests on one person's use of a beta, and that a feature reading a conversation will behave differently for people who write differently.
The photo search is the part with the most reach and the least detail. Finding the right pictures from a request in a chat means Messages is reading the conversation and the photo library together. Apple's description says what it does, not where that matching happens. APPDOOK would want to know, before the feature ships, whether that work stays on the device or goes to Private Cloud Compute. Apple has given that kind of detail for other features, and it has not done so for this one.
TV profiles on iPhone are the most practical change in the list for families, and the least reported. A parent handing over a phone has until now handed over their own viewing history and recommendations. Whether a child's profile can be locked, so the child cannot simply tap back to the adult's, is not something any report has tested.
None of this is guaranteed to ship. Apple has already shown with this feature that a beta is not a promise, and 9to5Mac expects 27.2 to arrive within weeks rather than days.
