iPhone 18 Pro's third Live Activity is only ever Apple's own, pdfu finds, and iPhone Duo gets a Focus button
Apple sells the iPhone 18 Pro's Dynamic Island on three Live Activities at once. The third is only ever Apple's own, a code explorer finds.
The third Live Activity slot in the iPhone 18 Pro's Dynamic Island only ever shows a system activity, not a third-party app, according to the code explorer known as pdfu.
Apple's iPhone 18 Pro page advertises a redesigned Dynamic Island that shows up to three Live Activities at once, and gives live sports scores, navigation and music as its examples. In a post on X on 4 October, pdfu said the third activity in iOS 27 is always one of Apple's system activities, such as Now Playing or navigation, and is never another app. MacRumors reported the finding on 5 October. In practice, at most two apps share the island, and the third place goes to something the system runs.
This is one person's reading of iOS, repeated by MacRumors rather than independently confirmed. It is, however, easy to check: anyone with an iPhone 18 Pro and three apps running Live Activities can see whether the third appears. Apple's page does not mention a limit, and Apple has not commented.
The extra slot exists because the island got smaller. A teardown in September showed that Face ID's infrared camera now sits under the iPhone 18 Pro display, freeing room in the cutout.
What changes on the iPhone Duo Lock Screen?
In a second post the same day, pdfu described redesigned Focus controls for iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable, which has not yet shipped. When a Focus is active, a button appears above the bottom controls on the Lock Screen that turns it off, and on again, for as long as the Lock Screen is showing. After unlocking, the active Focus appears in the status bar above the clock.
pdfu presents it as new on iPhone Duo and says nothing about other iPhones. MacRumors places it among the ways Apple has rebuilt iOS 27 to adapt to the foldable as it opens, closes and moves between its two displays. Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific time on 16 October and the phone goes on sale on 23 October, so the finding can be checked within three weeks.
Our take
If pdfu is right, Apple's marketing is accurate and incomplete. Three Live Activities can be on screen at once, and two of the three examples on Apple's page are things the system shows anyway. What the page leaves out is that the third place is never open to an app. Someone following a match in one app and a food delivery in another will not see their taxi as well.
There is a fair case for the design. The island is small, and a third app competing for attention there would be clutter. Navigation and Now Playing are the activities most people want visible without asking, and Now Playing is shown by the system on behalf of whichever app is playing audio, so a music app is not shut out by the rule. Apple has been rethinking how much room that activity earns elsewhere too: iOS 27 already lets you swipe the Now Playing controls off the Lock Screen.
For app makers it changes the arithmetic. A Live Activity on an iPhone 18 Pro competes for two places, not three, and Apple's marketing says nothing about how the system chooses between apps. APPDOOK's advice does not change with the hardware: design the compact and minimal presentations so the activity still reads well when it is not the one in the island, and do not tell users during onboarding that they will see it there.
The Duo change is smaller. A Focus switch on the Lock Screen puts one of the settings people change most often one tap away, and it is hard to see why it should stay on one model. Until the phone ships, though, it is an unreleased feature found by one person, and we treat it as that.
