Apple TV is still listed as down on Apple's status page the morning after the services outage
Apple's System Status page still shows Apple TV as an ongoing issue the morning of 1 October, while outside tests and outage trackers suggest it is working.
Apple's System Status page still lists Apple TV as an ongoing problem on the morning of 1 October, more than 14 hours after Apple's services outage began.
The entry, read from Apple's status data at 11.02 UTC on 1 October, gives a start time of 1.43pm Pacific on 30 September, which is 4.43pm Eastern, and no end time. Apple classes it as an issue rather than an outage, says some users are affected, and gives one line of explanation: Apple TV may be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance. Every other service that went down on the evening of 30 September, including the App Store, Apple Music and Fitness+, is marked resolved, as MacRumors and AppleInsider both reported on 1 October.
The same status data records one problem the first reports did not mention. AppleCare on Device, the in-settings purchase of AppleCare cover, had a full outage from 2.30pm to 3.15pm Pacific on 30 September. Apple says all users were affected and that buying AppleCare was temporarily unavailable. That entry is closed.
Is Apple TV actually still down?
The evidence points both ways. Apple's own page says the problem is ongoing. AppleInsider says its own testing found Apple TV working outside the United States, and that the outage tracker DownDetector showed no current problems when it checked. MacRumors, reporting at 3.51am Pacific, describes Apple TV as still unavailable for an unknown number of users, but its account rests on the status page rather than on testing of its own. DownDetector refused our own request, so we could not check it independently.
We give most weight to the status page for one reason: it is the only source that would know. Apple sees its own servers, and it has not closed the entry. Outside tests show only that Apple TV works for the people running them.
What can you do if Apple TV is not working?
Very little on the device itself. The fault, whatever it is, sits on Apple's side. Apple's status page at apple.com/support/systemstatus is where the entry will close when the work ends. On 30 September 9to5Mac found the Apple TV app's interface failed to load on iPhone while playback worked on other devices, so another device on the same account is worth trying.
Our take
The status page is telling two stories at once. It labels the entry an issue, the category Apple uses for a fault, and then explains it as scheduled maintenance, which is something Apple plans. AppleInsider makes the same point and adds that Apple rarely takes services offline for maintenance at all. Both cannot fully be true, and the label most likely to be accurate is the one Apple chose first: something went wrong on the evening of 30 September, and the TV service has taken longest to recover.
We covered the first night in our round-up of Apple TV's October shows and the 30 September outage, where the pattern looked like a shared back-end change that reached several Apple apps at once. Nothing published since changes that reading, and the closed AppleCare entry fits it: a purchase flow went down for 45 minutes on the same afternoon, before the wider problems began.
APPDOOK's reading is that the open entry is now more likely a status page that has not been updated than a service still broken for many people, given what AppleInsider and DownDetector saw. That is a judgement, not something any source confirms. What nobody has said is which users are affected, in which countries, or why. Apple has not commented beyond its one line. For a subscription service, a fault left open on its own status page for a whole night, with no explanation, is the part worth noticing.
