AT&T texts iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to install iOS 27.0.1, warning some cannot make calls, including to 911

AT&T is texting iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to install iOS 27.0.1, saying some phones cannot complete calls, texts or data, including 911 calls.

AT&T has sent text messages telling iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to install iOS 27.0.1 straight away, because some of the phones cannot complete calls, texts or data sessions.

MacRumors published the wording of the message late on 1 October US time. It labels the update important and says some phones may be unable to complete calls, texts or data, including to 911. It directs owners to Settings, General, Software Update, and to contact AT&T or Apple with questions. MacRumors did not say how it obtained the message, and no other outlet has published a separate copy or an AT&T statement. AT&T has posted nothing on its newsroom. Apple has not commented.

What owners have been reporting

The fault has been visible for a week. MacRumors first reported it on 25 September, and The Apple Post gathered further accounts from Apple's own support forums two days later. Owners on AT&T describe calls, texts and mobile data failing all the time or on and off, with the phone often dropping to SOS only. Some also describe eSIM activation failing on AT&T. Wi-Fi Calling is reported to keep working. An AT&T support account on X has been handling individual cases, which confirms the carrier knew of the problem before the text went out, but it is not a statement on cause or scale.

Does iOS 27.0.1 fix it?

That is the open question. Apple released iOS 27.0.1 on 28 September. Its release notes describe the fix for the iPhone 18 Pro Face ID restarts and say nothing about cellular service or AT&T. No carrier settings update has been reported. MacRumors says many affected owners report that 27.0.1 has not cured the problem, and suggests a further update may be needed if the cause is in software.

Is the Qualcomm modem to blame?

The model matters here. The US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the one iPhone 18 that uses a Qualcomm modem rather than Apple's own C2, a detail Apple's specification page lists only by omission. Every outlet that has noted the link has also said it is unproven, and The Apple Post warns explicitly against assuming it. No report says whether Verizon or T-Mobile customers with the same phone are affected, which is the comparison that would point at the modem or away from it.

Our take

A carrier texting its customers about a handset fault is rare, and a text that names emergency calls is rarer. Whatever the cause, that is the right decision: anyone whose phone falls to SOS needs to know before they need to dial 911, not after. APPDOOK's advice to AT&T customers with an iPhone 18 Pro Max is to install 27.0.1, turn on Wi-Fi Calling at home, and if service still drops, ask AT&T to reissue the eSIM before assuming the phone is faulty.

What is missing is an explanation. AT&T's text points at an Apple update whose notes do not mention the problem, while owners say the update has not fixed it. One of three things is true: the fix is in 27.0.1 and undocumented, it is coming in a later release, or the problem sits somewhere neither update touches. Apple and AT&T between them know which, and a single sentence from either would settle it.

If the Qualcomm modem is involved, that would be an awkward detail in the one model Apple did not move to its own chip. Nothing so far shows that it is, and until a second carrier reports the same fault, the cautious reading is that this is an AT&T network or provisioning problem that happens to show on one phone.
