iPhone Duo Get Ready opens on 12 October, as unconfirmed reports put assembly yields near 60 per cent
Apple's Get Ready step for iPhone Duo pre-orders opens on 12 October. A Chinese report, unconfirmed by Apple, puts assembly yields just above 60 per cent.
Apple will open its Get Ready process for iPhone Duo pre-orders on Monday 12 October, according to its iPhone Duo product page.
The date was added to the page on 28 September and reported by MacRumors and 9to5Mac the next day. Get Ready lets a buyer choose colour, storage, carrier, accessories, an AppleCare+ plan and a trade-in, and save a payment method and addresses, so that the order itself takes one tap. It runs in the Apple Store app and on Apple's online store. Pre-orders open on Friday 16 October at 5am Pacific time, 8am Eastern, and the phone launches on 23 October from 1,999 dollars.
What do the production reports say?
This part is not confirmed by Apple. The Chinese business outlet Jiemian News reported on 29 September, citing unnamed supply-chain sources, that Foxconn's assembly yield for the Duo is just above 60 per cent, meaning roughly four in ten units are not passing inspection first time. One source estimated six months to a year before yields mature under Apple's current standards. AppleInsider and 9to5Mac both relayed the report and both credit Jiemian, so it is a single source.
According to that report, the low yield has no single cause. Production equipment and settings still need refining, Samsung Display's folding panels and hinge parts from other suppliers have also had yield problems and late deliveries, and the hinge alone has more than 100 parts working to tight tolerances. Apple reportedly considered and dropped liquid metal for some hinge parts before mass production. A source told Jiemian that Apple has refused to relax its quality standards, and 9to5Mac's reading of the report gives a target of 6 to 8 million units ready for 2026, against 20 to 30 million for a typical Pro model.
Separately, Counterpoint Research analyst Ivan Lam told Bloomberg on 30 September that Apple could sell around 6 million Duos in 2026, depending on how production ramps. That is a forecast, not a leak.
Duo-Man, an app for the fold
One small sign of what developers will do with the hardware: developer Vidit Bhargava built Duo-Man at a hackathon, an app that turns the Duo into a Sony Walkman. Opening the phone lets the user pick an album as a cassette, and closing it starts playback, with clicks recorded from a real Walkman. 9to5Mac reports it will be released as a real app, with Apple Music support.
Our take
Get Ready is always useful and this year it matters more than usual. If the yield reports are anywhere near right, launch-day supply will be thin and the first allocation will go in minutes, and saved choices are the difference between a 23 October delivery and a November one. It is also the safest route: the real process lives in the Apple Store app and on apple.com, and anything promising earlier access is fake, as the bogus iPhone Duo pre-order page carrying an iPhone exploit showed.
The yield figure needs care. It comes from one outlet and anonymous sources, nobody else has confirmed it, and Apple says nothing about production. A 60 per cent first-pass yield on a brand-new folding design is also not as alarming as it sounds; units that fail inspection are often reworked rather than scrapped. What the report does fit is the long gap between announcement and shipping, and the hinge being the hard part, which is where Apple's hardware chief asked to be held accountable on the crease. APPDOOK grades the yield claim as unverified but plausible, and the 6 million forecast as an analyst's estimate.
Duo-Man is a toy, and a telling one. It uses the fold as an input, open to choose and close to play, which is exactly the sort of thing Apple's guidance makes possible: apps can read the iPhone Duo hinge angle, even if Apple advises against building layouts on it. Expect more apps that treat opening and closing as a gesture rather than just a change of screen size.
