Apple Watch Series 12 or keep your Series 9, 10 or 11: what each upgrade actually gets you

Apple's compare page shows Series 12 adds little over Series 11, more over Series 10, and the most over Series 9. What each step buys, and what it loses.

Apple's comparison page now lists the Apple Watch Series 12 against the three models before it, and the gap varies a great deal depending on which one you own.

The Series 12 went on sale in September with the S11 chip, new heart sensors and a starting price of $399 in the US for the 42mm aluminium model. watchOS 27 still supports the Series 9 and later, so none of the three older watches is being pushed off software. MacRumors published a model-by-model upgrade guide on 2 October; the figures below are taken from Apple's own compare page.

Should a Series 11 owner upgrade?

Rarely. The two share battery life, case sizes and 5G. Series 12 adds the S11 chip, background heart rate sampling that feeds Recovery HRV and the Readiness score, Audio Intelligence features, and Ceramic Shield 2 on aluminium models, which Apple's footnotes say is 60 per cent tougher than the Series 11's glass. MacRumors' advice is that most Series 11 owners have little reason to move, and the compare page supports that.

From a Series 10 or a Series 9?

From a Series 10, the extra six hours of battery and 5G are the practical gains, on top of everything above. From a Series 9, the step is larger again: the thinner, larger-screen design that arrived with the Series 10, plus the depth gauge and water temperature sensor, according to MacRumors.

What you give up

Not everything moves forward. MacRumors notes the Series 12 case is about a millimetre wider and two grams heavier than the Series 11, with a display area about 2 per cent smaller. Live Rewind and Siri Recap, two headline features, arrive in beta later in 2026, need an iPhone 16 or later, start in English, and are not available in the EU.

Our take

Series 12 is a health-sensor upgrade first. The features a Series 11 lacks, the Readiness score built on more frequent heart readings, Recovery HRV and Audio Intelligence, are all new sensing, and they matter mostly to people who train and want a recovery number each morning. For everyone else on a Series 11, APPDOOK would wait a year.

A Series 9 owner is the clearest case for upgrading, because battery, 5G and the bigger display all arrive at once. A Series 10 owner sits in the middle and should decide on battery life alone. Two cautions apply to anyone buying in October. Series 12 and Ultra 4 dropped handwashing detection, which some owners relied on. And the first weeks brought restarts that watchOS 27.0.1 had to fix, so a new watch should be updated before it is judged. Anyone weighing the cheaper route has our comparison of the SE 3 and Series 12.
