Apple says iPhone 18 Pro Max units that lost AT&T service must be replaced, as carrier settings 72.1 arrive

Apple says iPhone 18 Pro Max phones that have lost AT&T service need replacing, and that iOS 27.0.1 and new carrier settings only stop it happening to others.

Apple said on 2 October that iPhone 18 Pro Max phones which have lost service on AT&T cannot be fixed with software and need to be replaced.

In a statement given to 9to5Mac, MacRumors and Bloomberg, Apple described an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on AT&T's network that can leave a phone without service and unable to make calls. Apple urged every iPhone 18 Pro Max owner to update, and said iOS 27.0.1 and a new carrier settings file are together meant to stop the fault occurring. The outlets report Apple's further guidance that a phone already affected will not recover through those updates, and that its owner should contact Apple Support or AT&T, or go to an Apple Store or AT&T store, for a replacement.

That clarifies a muddle from the day before. AT&T had texted customers telling them to install iOS 27.0.1 immediately, and its wording implied the update was the fix. Owners who had already installed it reported, to 9to5Mac and on Reddit, that their phones still showed SOS. Apple's statement separates the two groups: the update protects phones that have not failed, and it does nothing for phones that have.

What changed on 2 October

  • AT&T carrier settings 72.1, up from 72.0.2. Apple says it installs automatically within 14 days; Settings, General, About prompts for it sooner.
  • Apple began requiring iOS 27.0.1 to set up a new iPhone 18 Pro Max, MacRumors reported.
  • AT&T told MacRumors it is working with Apple to make it right, and that customers can return to an Apple or AT&T store.
  • iOS 27.0.1 itself shipped on 28 September. Its release notes mention Face ID and the camera, not cellular service.

How do you know if your iPhone 18 Pro Max is affected?

There is no official test. The working sign, used by every outlet that has reported it, is a phone on AT&T that shows SOS or no service and does not recover after updating to iOS 27.0.1 and installing the new carrier settings. MacRumors' original report on 25 September said the loss could be constant or come and go. Bloomberg described affected phones as largely unusable away from Wi-Fi. Apple says it has seen the fault only on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and only on AT&T.

Apple has not said what causes it. Several outlets point out that the US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only current model with a Qualcomm modem rather than Apple's own, and none of them claims that proves anything.

Our take

We reported on 2 October that AT&T was texting iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to install iOS 27.0.1, and that Apple's notes for that update did not mention cellular service. Apple's statement confirms that the silence was meaningful. The update was never a repair, and anyone who installed it and waited for signal to return was waiting for nothing.

Requiring a replacement is a tacit admission that something in some units is physically wrong, or wrong in a way software cannot reach. That makes the modem question harder to wave away. Apple's own specification page lists a Qualcomm X80 in US Pro Max models and its C2 everywhere else, and the fault has appeared only in that one combination of phone and country. It is circumstantial, and APPDOOK would not call it the cause until Apple or Qualcomm does, but it is the obvious question for Apple to answer.

The practical gaps matter more to owners. Nobody has said whether replacement is free in every case, though MacRumors expects Apple Stores to do it at no charge, nor whether a formal service programme will follow. Earlier, some customers were turned away under warranty. The 14-day return window for launch-day buyers also closed on 2 October, the day Apple spoke. Anyone affected should ask for a replacement, not a refund, and keep a note of when the phone first lost service.

It is the second launch fault on this phone resolved within a fortnight. iOS 27.0.1 fixed the Face ID restart in software. This one needed a new phone, and AT&T's own text to customers said that included calls to 911.
