iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone Duo: what the extra $800 buys, and what the Duo leaves out

Apple's iPhone Duo costs 800 dollars more than the iPhone 18 Pro at every storage size, and both phones run the same A20 Pro chip.

The Duo opened for pre-order on 16 October and is due on 23 October; the iPhone 18 Pro has been on sale since September. This comparison is built from Apple's own specification, compare and store pages, read on 16 October 2026, with MacRumors' buyer's guide of the same day used only as a cross-check. Apple publishes the memory of neither phone, so it is not compared here.

How much more does iPhone Duo cost?

In the US the gap is 800 dollars at every capacity, and in the UK it is 800 pounds at every capacity. Both come in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.

Much is shared. Apple lists the same A20 Pro chip, IP68 rating to 6 metres for 30 minutes, Ceramic Shield 2 front, Camera Control, 3,000 nit outdoor peak brightness, USB-C at up to 10Gb/s, 25W MagSafe and Qi2 charging and Apple's own C2 modem on both. Apple's US pages list dual eSIM with no SIM tray on either; MacRumors adds that the Pro keeps a nano-SIM in other countries while the Duo is eSIM-only everywhere.

What does the Duo give up?

  • The telephoto. The Pro has a 48MP 4x lens and reaches 8x at optical quality; the Duo crops its main sensor for 2x and stops there.
  • Face ID. The Duo unlocks with a fingerprint on the side button, as an iPad Air does.
  • The Action Button. Apple's Duo page lists only Camera Control, the side button and volume buttons, so silent mode becomes a software setting.
  • Pro video. Apple's Duo page lists no ProRes, ProRes RAW or Apple Log 2.
  • Weight and pocket size. Closed, the Duo is 43g heavier and 2.55mm thicker, but 32mm shorter.

Our take

Most people should buy the iPhone 18 Pro. Same chip, a better camera, a lighter phone and 800 dollars left over. The Duo makes sense for one kind of buyer: someone who would actually use a 7.6-inch screen every day, for reading, documents, two apps at once or video, and would otherwise carry an iPad mini for it. For that person the Duo replaces two devices, and the price looks different.

From the app side, the inner screen is also the Duo's open question. A 1.42 to 1 canvas is a new shape for iPhone apps, and Apple has only just opened App Store submissions for Duo apps, with Duo screenshots not required until April 2027. Reading that timetable as app makers, we expect many third-party apps to lack a layout designed for the inner screen in the first months. If the apps you live in are third-party, wait for their updates before paying for the screen.

Running costs point the same way. MacRumors lists the Duo's inner display repair at 999 dollars without AppleCare+, against 329 for the Pro's screen, and AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss at 19.99 dollars a month against 14.99. On a first-generation folding phone, the extra premium is the part of the price APPDOOK would not skip, not least because the inner screen's top layer is designed to be replaced, for 19 dollars under AppleCare+.

Timing matters too. Duo pre-orders sold out in minutes, and Apple's US store moved to 25 January delivery, so a Duo ordered now is a new year phone. Anyone torn should handle a Duo in an Apple Store, open and closed, and if a bigger single screen is the real wish, our comparison of the Duo with the 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max covers that choice for 100 dollars more than the Pro.
