How to stop WhatsApp saving files to your Mac's Downloads folder, and clear out the ones already there
One checkbox in WhatsApp's Chats settings stops it copying photos, videos and documents into Downloads. Finder can then find and clear out the copies already there.
WhatsApp for Mac stops copying chat photos, videos and documents into the Downloads folder once you untick one setting, Save to Downloads, under Chats in its settings.
The copies are easy to spot because their names begin with WhatsApp, according to iDownloadBlog, which described the setting on 16 October 2026. The same switch turns up in an Apple Community answer from April 2024, so the setting has been in the app for at least two and a half years. The steps below apply to the native WhatsApp app for Mac. On 20 October we found version 26.40.77 on Apple's UK App Store, listed as needing macOS 12.1 or later, although WhatsApp's own download page still says macOS 11. The Finder steps follow Apple's Mac User Guide for macOS 27.
How do you stop WhatsApp saving to Downloads?
- Open WhatsApp on the Mac.
- Open its settings: click your profile picture at the bottom left of the window, or press Command and the comma key.
- Choose Chats.
- Untick Save to Downloads.
- Quit WhatsApp and open it again. iDownloadBlog suggests this, or a restart, if new files keep appearing.
The Apple Community answer adds two details. The same option sits in each conversation: click the contact or group name at the top of a chat and Save to Downloads appears there, so one busy group can be switched off while a work chat keeps saving. And changing the setting did not seem to affect files already received, which is why the clean-up below is a separate job.
How do you turn off media auto-download?
Media auto-download is a different control. It decides whether WhatsApp fetches a photo, voice message, video or document as soon as it arrives, rather than when you click it. iDownloadBlog places it under Settings, Storage and data, with a switch for each of Photos, Audio, Video and Documents. As we read the two settings, it is not the one that keeps files out of Downloads; iDownloadBlog lists it as an optional extra after the Chats setting.
Can you change where WhatsApp saves files?
Not as a default. None of the guides we checked describes a setting in WhatsApp for Mac that picks a different folder for automatic saves. The workable route is to leave Save to Downloads off and save the files you want one at a time: right-click a photo or document in the chat and choose Save As, which CodeItBro describes, then pick any folder. A file saved that way has a name and a place you chose, rather than joining a pile in Downloads.
How do you clean up WhatsApp files already in Downloads?
- Open Downloads in Finder with Option, Command and L, a shortcut on Apple's list of Mac keyboard shortcuts.
- Type WhatsApp in the search field at the top right and press Return. If the results cover This Mac, choose Downloads beside it so the search stays in that folder.
- To narrow it, click the Add button below the search field and choose Name, so only files with WhatsApp in their name are listed, as Apple's guide to narrowing a Finder search describes.
- Sort by size or date, keep what you want by dragging it to another folder, select the rest and press Command and Delete to move them to the Bin.
- Empty the Bin with Shift, Command and Delete, or leave the files there for a while: Apple's guide says items stay until the Bin is emptied, and File, Put Back returns one.
If the folder is likely to fill up again, click Save below the search field before closing the window. Apple's guide says a saved search becomes a Smart Folder, a list that updates itself, and with Add To Sidebar ticked it sits in the Finder sidebar as a running list of WhatsApp files in Downloads.
What you want | Where | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
No copies in Downloads | WhatsApp, Settings, Chats, Save to Downloads | New files only; existing copies stay |
No automatic media downloads | WhatsApp, Settings, Storage and data | Media waits for a click before it downloads |
One file in a folder you choose | Right-click the file in the chat, Save As | That file only |
Old copies gone | Finder search in Downloads, then the Bin | Removes the Downloads copies |
Our take
The design problem here is a default that copies every attachment out of the app without saying so. Downloads is the folder macOS treats as everyone's inbox, so files from a family group end up mixed in with installers, receipts and PDFs from Safari, and the folder stops being useful for either. For most people, APPDOOK recommends unticking Save to Downloads and using Save As for the few files worth keeping, because a file you save on purpose is one you can find again.
Be careful about one thing when clearing space. The hidden folder where WhatsApp keeps its own copies of chat media is not the same as Downloads, and the two guides we checked give different paths for it: the 2024 Apple Community answer points to a group container under Library, while CodeItBro gives a path under Library, Containers. That disagreement is reason enough to leave the hidden folder alone. CodeItBro says deleting it removes the Mac's local copies of chat media, and that WhatsApp may fetch again only what is still available. The Downloads copies are the ones to clear.
A name search is broad, so read the list before emptying the Bin: anything you renamed loses the WhatsApp prefix and will not show up, and any other file with WhatsApp in its name will. If you use WhatsApp on more than one Mac, open the Chats settings on each and check the box there too, rather than assuming one change covers both.
