HomePod mini 2 vs HomePod 2: which Apple smart speaker should you buy?

For most rooms the $149 HomePod mini 2 is the better buy: newer chip, newer wireless and a confirmed Siri AI update. The $349 HomePod 2 wins on sound.

For most rooms the $149 HomePod mini 2 is the better buy than the $349 HomePod (2nd generation), and the full-size speaker earns its extra $200 only where sound quality is the point.

The HomePod mini 2 ships on 30 October 2026 and replaces the original mini. The larger speaker, which Apple calls HomePod (2nd generation) and most people call HomePod 2, came out in February 2023 and has not changed since, apart from the June price rise that took it from $299 to $349. This guide is built from Apple's tech specs, product pages and store prices, with Macworld's launch analysis as a cross-check.

Prices are from Apple's own stores: the mini 2 as read on 18 October and the HomePod on 20 October. The UK, German and Indian prices include tax; the US ones do not. Both speakers have temperature and humidity sensors, Thread for smart home accessories, an Ultra Wideband chip for handing music over from a nearby iPhone, and Sound Recognition for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Both act as a home hub, the device that runs Home app automations while you are out.

How much better does the HomePod 2 sound?

The hardware gap is large. The HomePod 2 has a high-excursion woofer, which moves far enough to produce deep bass, and a ring of five tweeters that beam sound around the room. An internal microphone listens to the room and corrects the bass depending on whether the speaker is against a wall or in the open; Apple calls this room sensing. It also plays Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. Apple's own comparison on the mini 2 page marks room sensing and Spatial Audio as not available on the mini.

Apple's release for the mini 2 credits the S10 chip with tuning dynamic range and loudness in real time, but it does not say the driver or the enclosure changed, and Macworld does not claim better sound either. Until reviews arrive, the safe expectation is a mini 2 that sounds much like the original. Our report on the mini 2 announcement covers what did change, from the colours to the lights on top.

Which one gets Siri AI first?

The mini 2. Apple says Siri AI, the new Siri powered by Apple Intelligence, comes to the mini 2 in a free update with no date, in English in eight countries, and it needs the home owner to have an iPhone or iPad that runs Apple Intelligence. Siri AI is not initially available in the EU on iOS or iPadOS, Apple's footnote says. For the full-size HomePod Apple has announced nothing, as our Siri AI device list sets out. When we read Apple's US HomePod order page on 20 October, the only Siri AI mention was in the description of a HomePod mini 2 picture.

Stereo pairs, Apple TV and the Mac

  • Stereo pairs need two of the same model and generation, Apple says. A mini 2 cannot pair with a HomePod 2, or with an original mini.
  • Four-speaker surround with the new Apple TV 4K (4th generation) takes four mini 2s, four HomePod 2s, or a front pair of one and a rear pair of the other.
  • Playing TV sound through HomePods via HDMI ARC or eARC works with an Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) or later and either speaker, per Apple Support.
  • Both work as a speaker for a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later, alone or as a stereo pair, according to footnotes on Apple's HomePod mini page and in its mini 2 release.

Our take

Adding up Apple's prices, the gap is the same story in every region we checked: the full-size HomePod costs about 2.3 to 2.4 times as much as a mini 2. A stereo pair of minis is $298 or £298; a pair of full-size HomePods is $698 or £698. For the price of one HomePod 2 you get two minis and $51 to spare in the US, enough for stereo in one room or a speaker in two.

What the extra money buys is entirely sound. On every other count the cheaper speaker is the newer one: a newer chip, Wi-Fi 6E against the much older 802.11n, Bluetooth 6, and the only confirmed path to Siri AI. That last point is the one a designer looks at first, because the assistant is the HomePod's main interface. We read a HomePod as something spoken to at least as often as it is listened to closely, and on the mini 2 that conversation is due to improve. On the HomePod 2 it may or may not.

Room by room, this is where APPDOOK lands:

  • Kitchen, bedroom, bathroom doorway, child's room: one HomePod mini 2. It is small, light and good enough for radio, podcasts and timers.
  • Desk with a recent Mac: one mini 2, or a pair if music matters. Check your Mac has Wi-Fi 6E first.
  • Living room, mainly for music: one HomePod 2. Its woofer and room sensing are built to fill a room from one spot, which a mini's single driver is not.
  • TV with an Apple TV 4K: a pair of HomePod 2s for Dolby Atmos films and series. On a tighter budget, a mini pair is the cheaper way to stereo TV sound.
  • Smart home only: the mini 2 is the cheaper of the two Thread hubs, and Apple says Thread-based Matter accessories need one.

Anyone planning full surround should start with minis. Our costing of four-HomePod surround put four minis with the new Apple TV at $895, against $1,695 for four HomePod 2s, and a mixed set can upgrade the front pair later. The HomePod 2 is close to four years old, so if the assistant matters as much as the sound, buy the mini 2 now and add a full-size pair once Apple says whether that model gets Siri AI.
