In brief
9to5Mac picked out three iPhone Phone app features worth switching on on 18 October, and the smaller Apple news this morning also includes a Bloomberg account of how iPhone Duo was first meant to launch and a walk-through of Siri's voice settings.
Call Screening, Hold Assist and Call Context in the Phone app
Two of the three arrived with iOS 26. Call Screening answers a call from a number not in your contacts, asks the caller who they are and why they are calling, and shows the reply so you can pick up or let it go to voicemail. Apple's support page on unknown callers puts it under Settings, Apps, Phone, where unknown callers can be set to Never, Ask Reason for Calling or Silence; the middle option is the screening one. Hold Assist waits on hold for you and alerts you when a person comes on the line. Apple's support page says it works on iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and later, is not offered in every country, transcribes on the iPhone itself and does not record the call. 9to5Mac's Chance Miller tells readers to turn on Hold Assist Detection, but Apple says that setting is already on by default.
The third, Call Context, is an Apple Intelligence feature in iOS 27. When you ring a business, it shows details such as a booking code or order number on the call screen. 9to5Mac describes it finding them in Mail; Apple's own page says it searches Mail, Messages, Wallet and Calendar, and that the switch is Show When Calling, under Settings, Apps, Phone, Apple Intelligence & Siri. It needs an iPhone that runs Apple Intelligence, which 9to5Mac gives as iPhone 15 Pro or later.
Of the three, Ask Reason for Calling is the one most owners should set this morning: Hold Assist detection is already on, while Call Context only helps when the booking is sitting in one of those four apps.
Gurman: iPhone Duo was meant to launch in only the US and China
Apple originally planned to sell iPhone Duo only in the US and China at first, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman wrote in his Power On newsletter on 18 October, before deciding to open pre-orders in more than 70 countries and regions at once on 16 October. Apple's own announcement of 9 September lists that first wave, which includes the UK, Germany and India, with 28 more countries and regions from 30 October. Gurman, as MacRumors quotes him, called the launch "a major mistake", saying Apple knew supply would be severely constrained and went ahead anyway. Estimates slipped to about 25 January within half an hour, as we reported when the first allocation sold out. This is Reported grade, resting on Gurman's sourcing.
According to iClarified, Gurman also disputed reports that Apple Stores were turning away launch-day walk-ins, saying there was no company-wide instruction, though individual store managers may have given that guidance. On Apple's own stores on 18 October the 256GB model was $1,999 in the US, £1,999 in the UK, €2,299 in Germany and ₹2,99,900 in India, so under the original plan those last three would have been waiting with nothing to order.
Anyone holding a January date should check the order again in the Apple Store app before cancelling: MacRumors notes that Apple's estimates tend to be cautious.
How to change Siri's voice in iOS 27
iClarified walked through the steps on an iPhone 18 Pro Max. Open Settings, Siri, Voice, choose an accent from American, Australian, British, Indian, Irish and South African, then tap one of seven coloured swatches to hear and pick a voice; there is no Save button. iClarified says the new voice is also used in Maps and Safari. With Siri AI's Expressive Voices, two sliders appear underneath, Pace and Expressivity, which iClarified says Apple offers only for American and British voices for now. Apple's support page confirms the path and adds that Apple Watch and CarPlay follow the iPhone's speaking speed. Without Siri AI, speaking speed is under Settings, Accessibility, Siri.
iClarified lists the sliders for iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, without iPhone Duo; when we covered the arrival of the Pace and Expressivity sliders on 1 October, iDownloadBlog's list did include Duo, and Apple still publishes no list of its own. Anyone choosing one of the other four accents gives up the sliders, so a British or American voice is the pick for someone who wants Siri slower or calmer.
Our take
Two of today's three items are settings most iPhone owners have never opened, and that says more about how Apple ships features than about the features themselves. Call Screening and Hold Assist have been there for a year, and they work without Siri AI or a Pro phone. The order we would suggest is the cheap one first: set screening for unknown numbers, leave Hold Assist detection alone, and only then explore Call Context and the voice sliders, which depend on the hardware you have.
The iPhone Duo account is the one with consequences. If Gurman is right, Apple chose a launch that looks global on 16 October and feels the same everywhere by Christmas: a pre-order slot and a January date. A two-country launch would have meant real deliveries in two markets and none elsewhere. APPDOOK thinks the honest test comes on 23 October, when Apple Stores outside the US and China show how many walk-in units they actually have, and that is the day to decide whether a January Duo is worth waiting for or whether an iPhone 18 Pro now is the better buy.
