  1. tvOS 27.2 release candidate is out: how four-HomePod surround sets up on the new Apple TV 4K, and what it costs(you are reading this)

Apple released tvOS 27.2 and HomePod Software 27.2 release candidates to developers on Monday 19 October, and MacRumors reports that they add four-speaker surround sound for the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K.

A release candidate is the build Apple expects to ship unless testing finds a problem. Both MacRumors and iClarified reported the two seeds, which arrived with watchOS and visionOS 27.2 on the same day as the iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2 release candidates. MacRumors expects the public versions next week. Buyers cannot try the feature before then in any case: the only Apple TV that supports it is available from 13 November.

How the four-HomePod setup works

According to MacRumors, the system is set up on the Apple TV itself, though the process can be started from the Apple TV Remote app on an iPhone. Once grouped, the speakers and the box form a home theatre group that the system treats as one accessory, not as four separate audio devices. Apple said in its 13 October announcement that the speakers recognise where they sit in the room and calibrate timing and levels to it automatically.

Which HomePods and Apple TV models work?

The footnote to Apple's announcement sets the rule: four speakers, each a HomePod (2nd generation) or a HomePod mini 2, arranged as a front pair and a rear pair, with the two speakers in each pair matching, connected to the new Apple TV 4K Apple announced on 13 October running current software. That allows three systems: four minis, four full-size HomePods, or one pair of each.

MacRumors spells out what is left out: the original HomePod, the original HomePod mini, and every earlier Apple TV.

What does a four-HomePod system cost?

We added up each system with the new box, using the prices on Apple's own stores in the US, UK, Germany and India, read on 18 and 19 October. US prices exclude sales tax; the others include VAT or, in India, all taxes.

Our take

The people this suits best already have half of it. If two second-generation HomePods sit under your TV as a stereo pair today, they can stay at the front, and adding two minis behind the sofa plus the new box comes to $597, £597, €687 or ₹77,700 by our sums. APPDOOK thinks that is the one upgrade here that is easy to justify, because the expensive speakers are already paid for. Owners of an original HomePod pair have no route in at all; those speakers stay as they are, and a surround system means starting again.

From a design point of view, the two choices that matter are the ones that remove decisions. Treating four speakers and a box as one accessory should mean one volume and one output to pick, instead of four devices to manage. Automatic placement detection removes the step of telling the system which speaker is rear left. Compare that with what we reported from the audioOS 27.2 beta on 6 October, including a September test in which FlatpanelsHD could play audio through four HomePods but had no way to give the back pair rear roles. The code also pointed to HomePods passing Siri requests to the Apple TV; neither Apple's announcement nor today's report mentions that, so we would not count on it in this release.

Two limits are worth knowing before buying. Apple describes four speakers and nothing else: no separate centre speaker for dialogue and no subwoofer, so voices come from the front pair. And the box itself has no audio passthrough and no DTS, so anyone running a receiver or a disc collection is better served by the system they have. For everyone else, the sensible order is to wait for the public tvOS 27.2 release and the first reviews of the new box before buying four speakers for it.
